ESAU ALEMAN: Maestro of Latin Music

~ Live Performance at the Rumor Mill ~

ESAU ALEMAN was born in 1965 in Nejapa, El Salvador, a little town northeast of that nation’s capital. He grew up with his great-grandmother, a descendant of the Maya, who taught him as a young boy that “everything gives love and never stops existing.” Due to political and military turmoil in his home country, his mother moved the family to Costa Rica in 1979, where he lived from boyhood  through his college years. Given his particular odyssey of upheaval, gaining the level of musical sophistication that he has attained and getting to the point where he was able toto record his first CD, “ Tu Me Llenaste de Amor” (2008) was no easy task. He notes that he has played “on the streets, in buses, in bars, at parties”—and eventually even for movie stars. But, through it all—“during which I’ve loved this art that I did not choose; the art loved me and put me in these circumstances”– his love affair with music and his dedication to his craft has remained paramount. Today he must be considered a maestro of Latin music, and his playing and singing embraces and commands an impressive range of musical genres—flamenco, tango, bolero, ranchera, even the blues and classical music—forms through which he moves with precision and a fluid grace. Esau (pronounced “e-saw-oo”) sings in a deep, rich, masculine baritone and with a great depth of feeling. He is a compelling performer and one not to be missed.

Admission to this concert is free. Esau will be offering CDs of “ Tu Me Llenaste de Amor” at the show for $5. Do yourself a favor and bring an extra five bucks.

“I’m one of those who fear the men who judge the world and everything in it from reading a single book. I mean, {life, this album} is a carnival of sorrow and joys, a path of suffering through Central America and North America. It’s a universal insanity. I hope you like it.” –Esau
