LISA NANAKORN was born sometime in the late ‘60s in Scranton, PA and was raised in the farm areas of Bethlehem, an upbringing that gave her a love of nature and influenced her choice of subjects, which range from flowers and produce to landscapes and conceptual photographs. Her new exhibition, ‘Food and Other Landscapes,’ delights in the topography of produce and she finds some startling imagery in these everyday edibles. Eleven years ago she fell in love with the Getty Museum while on vacation here. Going home to the ice and snow of Pennsylvania made her realize she wanted to move to
Los Angeles. Move she did. She also fired off a resume to the Getty seeking employment, waiting more than a year before a position opened up. Today, she works as the Getty’s visitor services lead, a job that finds her involved in every aspect of visitor services, and that affords her a daily ocean view in an environment she loves.
She first discovered her love for photography at Northampton College (graduating from there in 1988) and participated during her student years in group exhibitions. For its past five exhibitions Lisa has been part of the J. Paul Getty Museum’s Underground Staff Art Show, and has been part of various other group art shows at local galleries. Regular patrons here may remember ‘Lisa Carrots’ (as we affectionately call her) from her exhibition a year ago, as the artist who was walking to raise money for breast cancer awareness, and whose exhibition contained an iconic, hand-painted, black-and-white image of a priapic carrot. ‘Food and Other Landscapes’ marks her return to RUMOURS with a new solo show. We are happy to welcome her back.
When not at her day job at the Getty, Lisa likes to wander with a camera in hand, letting the day and her instinct take her where it will, which, she says, “energizes me, relaxes me, and makes my heart smile.” She also loves the magic of seeing her pictures come to life in the developing tray. These days, since buying a good digital camera, she also finds herself spending hours in front of the computer. Her husband Steve’s love of computers (and his steadfast support of her passion for photography) has aided her embrace of the new technology, though she still loves working in a darkroom.
ANDREW KELSEY is a compelling singer/songwriter with roots in folk, rock, and funk music, who has often drawn
comparison to singers like James Taylor, Dave Matthews, and Jason Mraz. Well-versed as a solo acoustic artist (as he will be performing here), Andrew writes transcendent original songs from his own life that his audiences find easy to relate to their own lives and experience. The songs you will hear tonight will be on Andrew’s upcoming (second) solo CD and display the range of his style and versatility, with sounds ranging from mellow to funky and a variety of moods and musical flavors from romantic sentiment to sexy grooving. A mainstay on the Los Angeles music scene, he is well-known as the lead singer/guitarist for the rock band Uncle Charlie.
